Sonja Brunner Announces Candidacy For Santa Cruz City Council

Santa Cruz, CA – Downtown Association Director of Operations and Housing Authority of Santa Cruz County Board Chair, Sonja Brunner, kicked off her campaign this weekend with hopes to offer the residents of Santa Cruz a fresh perspective and a collaborative approach to local government.

Sonja’s driving force behind running for council is her desire to apply an equitable lens to all issues concerning Santa Cruz, including access to affordable housing, proactive approaches to public health and safety, and programs that boost economic vitality for all Santa Cruzans.

“Working for the Downtown Association of Santa Cruz for 8 years and managing a downtown business for 10+ years before that, I’m very aware of the need to make sure our public spaces are safe and vibrant for Santa Cruz residents and visitors. It’s critical to continue supporting vital social services, investing in preventative programs for at risk populations, and ensuring we promote an equity centered approach to ensuring a thriving community for everyone that calls Santa Cruz home.”

Due to Covid-19, there are many uncertainties about the uncharted territory ahead. Our community will be faced with unprecedented challenges and many difficult decisions. Sonja Brunner is uniquely qualified to serve Santa Cruz as a member of the City Council. Her diverse endorsements from elected officials and community leaders demonstrate her long record of developing strong local partnerships, broad perspective and experience and a proven ability to collaborate with others on our toughest issues. Sonja will help navigate Santa Cruz towards policies and initiatives that will produce effective and equitable outcomes for everyone.
Sonja’s experience has taught her the value of civil service, and the great impact of serving at a local level. She is honored to have an opportunity to serve the community of Santa Cruz as a member of the City Council.

ABOUT SONJA BRUNNER
Sonja Brunner has been a resident of Santa Cruz for 28 years. Sonja is bilingual and multicultural, a Cabrillo College graduate in Liberal Studies, an artist, a community organizer and raised her son as a single working mother. Sonja Brunner is passionate about keeping Santa Cruz strong, healthy and vibrant. Sonja’s long standing and continued participation and leadership, including her work with the Downtown Association of Santa Cruz and the Housing Authority of the County of Santa Cruz, uniquely qualifies her to provide successful leadership on the Santa Cruz City Council.
