Student Crashes Stolen Seascape Beach Resort Golf Cart

SANTA CRUZ, CA — A man was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of stealing a golf cart, crashing it, then trying to flee on a stolen bicycle.

Mason William Wheeler, 19, of Aptos was arrested pre-dawn after deputies were called to Seascape Beach Resort on a report of a stolen golf cart.

"The suspect crashed the golf cart and fled on a bicycle," the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said. The suspect, later identified as Wheeler, was found a few blocks away from the resort and was arrested.

The bicycle Wheeler used to try to get away was stolen from a nearby home and was returned to the owners, according to the sheriff's office.

Wheeler was arrested for grand theft and booked into county jail shortly before 11 a.m. Saturday but was subsequently released late Sunday on a $10,000 bond.

Jail records show Wheeler is a student, but his school was not named.
