SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — When the call came into the sheriff's office earlier this year, it was a matter of life or death. A man had texted his family with a devastating message: he was going to commit suicide by overdosing.

Deputies had to move fast. They began searching the county for the at-risk man. Three deputies eventually spotted his car in Felton, and they found the man suffering from an overdose. He had a faint pulse and was barely breathing.

Fortunately, the deputies were equipped with the fast-acting intranasal antidote Narcan. After two doses of the anti-overdose drug, the man regained consciousness and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
