Track Meets for Kids
If you are the parent of a 5-13 year-old, the Santa Cruz Track Club provides a way to introduce your child to running with its Youth All Comer Track Meets.

Every Tuesday night from now until June 21, 2011, the Santa Cruz Track Club will bring together boys and girls, ages 5 through 13 to participate in its All Comer Track Meets at Soquel High School. Meets are held from 6 p.m. to approximately 7:15 p.m., and participation is only $5 per child.
These meets are a blast for the young athletes, allowing the kids to compete in up to four events ranging from the 100 meter dash, hurdles, throws, jumps and more. Meets are created with sportsmanship and fun in mind, and all kids are recognized for their efforts. Last year, many great results were achieved and personal bests attained.
Running and participating in track events provides children the opportunity to develop cardiovascular endurance, mental toughness, increase self-confidence and improve balance, strength and flexibility all while having a good time amongst their peers.

The benefits of the running go far beyond the track meets, though. Santa Cruz Track Club teaches kids about physical fitness and introduces them not only to the sport of running, but also shows them that it can be a life-long activity. Students learn the value of setting goals and trying to surpass them.
Everybody knows that an active child has a decreased risk of obesity. But did you know that children who exercise regularly have the ability to concentrate better than those who don’t, even at the end of a long school day? Studies report that exercise decreases anxiety, reduces depression, and improves mood and outlook in children. In addition, exercise enhances the brain’s metabolism. Studies also show that active children have improved memory as a result of better brain function.

Santa Cruz Track Club meet organizers bend over backwards to make these events successful and fun for all, so for those of you with little athletes at home or friends with little athletes at home, go out there and give it a try. You will be amazed at how well the kids perform.
There is no need to pre-register, but make sure your child comes prepared with proper shoes and clothing. Acceptable attire would be shorts, t-shirt and running shoes. It is also advisable to bring sun screen, a hair tie, a water bottle and a pair of sweats—it can get chilly in the evening.
The Santa Cruz Track Club is a non-profit organization established in 1989 to promote running and track and field by providing coaching and support programs in our community. The club operates two sections—one for adults and one for youth. It also helps local organizers of road races and track meets with event management.
