Weekend Shootings: Santa Cruz Police Seek Public's Help

SANTA CRUZ, CA — Gunfire that erupted over the weekend in Santa Cruz may have been gang motivated, and now the Santa Cruz Police Department has obtained video surveillance showing one of the suspect vehicles.

Police are hoping that by releasing images, the public can help identify the suspects involved.

The shootings were reported Sunday around 9 p.m. in the area of Third St., Front St. and Cowell Beach, according to the SCPD.

During the investigation, four bullet casings were found, and a light pole near Cowell Beach appeared to have been hit by a bullet, police said. Witnesses reported seeing two cars driving at a high rate of speed, possibly chasing each other when the gunshots were heard. Other witnesses in the area reported being asked by two people in a dark sedan if they were affiliated with a gang, police continued.

The SCPD has increased its patrol presence in the area. Detectives are reviewing security footage and conducting follow up with the Santa Cruz County Gang Task Force.
