The Turning Point: In the beginning of the second set, Cabrillo looked a little rattled down by four points. However, the ladies from Aptos remembered why they are the state's best and came back with a well-rounded effort to earn a second set and a 3-0 sweep.

APTOS—On a special night for the Cabrillo College women's volleyball team, the team secured its 25th win of the season with toughness and heart in a hard-fought shutout win at home on sophomore night.

Cabrillo will now take a 25-1 record into the state playoffs, which begin Tuesday.

Sophomores Shelby Angobalso (St. Francis High-Watsonville), Rachel Ferren (Soquel High), Stefanie Mahaley, Chloe Tushar (Aptos High) and Skyler Moon all were honored before the game. But Wednesday night's season finale wasn't a walk in the park.

De Anza battled Cabrillo hard until the very last point, but the home team was able to still walk away with another home sweep.

Sophmore setter Ferren said she is happy to secure another important win.

"This win puts us into a really good seed for state," Ferren said.

The Seahawks take first place in the Coast Conference South Division, making them back-to-back winners.

Cabrillo placed second in the conference in 2008.

De Anza didn't allow Cabrillo to run away, avoiding any double-digit margins during the contest.

"We played really good in a tough battle tonight," head coach Gabby Houston said.

Freshman outside hitter Ally Russo and sophomore right-side hitter Mahaley also helped contribute a much-needed 12 kills for the Seahawks offense.

The first game was the only comfort that the Seahawks had as the team played together with great energy and solid play.

The second set was the closest of them all, as Cabrillo pulled out of the heart-pounding game with a (28-26) victory.

"This finishes our season 25-1, and heading into the playoffs, this gives a lot of confidence heading into our first playoff matchup," Houston said.

The Seahawks got off to a forgettable start in the third, but ended the see-saw affair with a 5-0 burst to close out the game and the match.

"We all contributed in this win, and with this win, I think we are going to be put in a great position in the playoffs," Ferren said.
