SANTA MONICA, CA — All classes at Santa Monica High School were canceled on Tuesday due to a power outage caused by a major blown fuse, District Superintendant Antonio Shelton said.

According to Shelton, repair crews have been working since Saturday morning to repair the wiring and replace the fuse, but power will still not be restored until late Tuesday morning. All students were asked to stay home for the day.

The Infant Toddler Center on Samohi Campus will also be closed due to the outage.

Project-based learning pathway students will still have school on the Santa Monica College campus, Shelton said. Students should refer to an email from their principal for additional details.

"It is unfortunate that this situation has a snowball effect requiring the loss of a school day, however, we are unable to have school without lighting, including in restrooms, heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC), no phones, other electrical needs, and no use of the kitchen to provide food services for students," Shelton said in an email.

Southern California Edison will be on campus to inspect, approve and restart the power by late morning. Major systems at the high school, such as the air conditioning, ventilation and technology, will need to be restarted after SCE concludes their work.

Student-athletes with games in the afternoon, including the tennis, girls flag football and volleyball teams, will receive instructions from their coaches about arriving at school for games as scheduled.

All other schools in the Santa Monica Malibu School District will have a regular school day and other campuses will remain open for instruction.

With power restored, school at Samohi is expected to continue as normal on Wednesday, Shelton said.
