You don't have to make pilgrimage to Taiwan to sample Din Tai Fung's storied xiao long bao soup dumplings that are meticulously prepared.
One of the 170 Michelin-recognized restaurants worldwide is right here at the Santa Monica Place, where a view of the ocean compliments perfectly perfect dumplings.
The first thing I noticed when I walked into Din Tai Fung was how busy the restaurant was. The workers were making dumplings in the kitchen, and the restaurant felt modern and clean. The servers were friendly and brought the food quickly.
My favorite dish was the chocolate-filled dumplings. They looked like regular dumplings on the outside, but when I bit into one, warm melted chocolate oozed out of the middle. The dumplings were sweet, soft and really fun to eat.
I also tried the chocolate mochi xiao long bao, which tasted rich and chewy. It was a good dessert because it was sweet without being too overwhelming.
Another dish I tried was the spicy noodles. The noodles had a lot of flavor and were a little spicy, but not too spicy. The sauce tasted savory and made the dish really enjoyable.
The cucumber salad was fresh and crunchy. It had a light garlic flavor that made it taste refreshing, especially after eating the noodles and desserts.
One thing I liked about Din Tai Fung was that all the food tasted fresh and well made. However, the restaurant was crowded, and the prices were a little expensive for some dishes.
Overall, I would rate Din Tai Fung an 8 out of 10. My favorite part was definitely the chocolate-filled dumplings because they were unique and delicious. I would recommend Din Tai Fung to people who want to try something different and enjoy both sweet and savory foods.
