Elderly Couple Found Dead In Overnight House Fire In Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA, CA — An elderly couple was found dead in a house that was ablaze overnight in Santa Monica, according to authorities and media reports.

Firefighters responded around 3 a.m. Sunday to the 500 block of Lincoln Boulevard, officials said, where the house was engulfed in flames.

Bystanders told authorities that two elderly residents might be at the home and the victims were found inside, according to Battalion Chief Robert Erdmann, who said life support was unsuccessful. The blaze has been extinguished, Erdmann said.

Rick Garcia, who identified himself to KTLA as the elderly couple's caregiver, told the outlet the victims were married for almost 70 years and had five children, calling the deceased "a lovely couple who had a great relationship."

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The Santa Monica Fire Department reminded residents on Sunday that working smoke alarms should be installed throughout a home, and residents should develop and practice a home fire escape plan.
