SANTA MONICA, CA — A juvenile was arrested after a man in his 20s was shot in the leg during an attempted robbery near the Santa Monica Pier Sunday evening, police said Monday.
Santa Monica police officers responded at about 7:49 p.m. to a reported shooting near the Pier ramp, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.
A preliminary investigation found that the victim was approached by a group of people and an altercation occurred during an attempted robbery, police said. During the altercation, one person fired a gun, striking the victim in the leg.
Officers provided emergency medical aid before the man was taken to a local hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening.
Police said a juvenile suspect was taken into custody later Sunday evening in connection with the incident.
Investigators are working to determine the juvenile's role in the attempted robbery and shooting, police said. Detectives are continuing to identify and locate the remaining people involved.
The shooting came one day after a separate deadly police encounter nearby in Palisades Park.
On Saturday afternoon, a Santa Monica police officer shot and killed a man who Police Chief Darrick Jacob said charged at officers with a knife while they were investigating an unrelated domestic violence incident in the 1400 block of Palisades Park.
Police said the man was not involved in the domestic violence incident. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
