1. 2-Month PCH Access Closure Begins In Santa Monica (patch.com) — Santa Monica drivers face about two months of disruption as the Moomat Ahiko Way ramps between Pacific Coast Highway and Ocean Avenue close for major demolition and construction on the aging Santa Monica Pier bridge. Detours via the California Incline and Interstate 10 will keep traffic moving while the pier itself, including its businesses and attractions, remains open with alternate access and parking options.
2. Husband Kills Wife, Then Himself in Santa Monica Murder Suicide (smobserved.com) — Santa Monica police say a husband fatally shot his wife, then himself, inside their home on the 3100 block of Pico Boulevard sometime Saturday morning, with officers only discovering the bodies during a nighttime welfare check. Investigators consider the shooting an isolated incident with no ongoing threat, but they're asking anyone with information to contact the SMPD Watch Commander or reach out to 988 in a crisis.
3. Santa Monica skirts SB 79 with its own upzoning plan (therealdeal.com) — Santa Monica's City Council has temporarily limited how much SB 79 can reshape single-family lots near the Expo/Bundy station by capping building heights and redefining development standards on 89 Pico-area parcels. The move, now under state review, buys time while the city updates its housing element and weighs how much upzoning is needed to meet its 8,895-unit housing target.
4. Serving Up Ocean Friendly Business Month 2026 (surfrider.org) — Santa Monica gets a shout-out as Pacific Catch is highlighted among Surfrider's Ocean Friendly Businesses, recognized for cutting single-use plastics and opposing new offshore oil drilling. Throughout October, Surfrider chapters nationwide are hosting ocean-friendly events and encouraging diners and travelers to support certified restaurants and hotels, leave positive reviews, and recruit more local businesses into the program.
