1. Santa Monica College Trustees To Review Police 'Military Equipment' (patch.com) — Santa Monica residents can weigh in as Santa Monica College trustees hold a public hearing on renewing the campus police "military equipment" policy, covering rifles, launchers and ammunition. Officials report the gear was not used in the last year, no complaints or violations were found, and the board will vote at its Malibu campus meeting and via Zoom.
2. Santa Monica's Economic Slump Worse Than Peer Cities, RAND Study Finds (patch.com) — Santa Monica's economy is lagging far behind neighboring cities, with taxable sales down nearly a third since 2015 and major retail corridors like Third Street Promenade and Santa Monica Place heavily vacant. A new RAND study also finds crime and homelessness highly concentrated downtown, while recommending the city expand business support programs and creative strategies to fill empty storefronts.
3. 85 Santa Monica Properties In Flood Zone As Kelvin Wave Approaches (patch.com) — Santa Monica officials are warning that 85 properties along northern PCH sit in a 100-year flood zone as a Kelvin wave and strong El Niño raise coastal flood risks this winter. Residents can pick up sandbags locally, review the city's hazard plan, consider flood insurance, and sign up for SMAlerts to stay informed during storms.
4. Santa Monica Airport Conversion Project to hold community event on Oct. 17 (santamonica.gov) — Santa Monica residents are invited to see the new Illustrative Master Plan for the future park at the airport site during a community event on Oct. 17 at Memorial Park Gym. You'll be able to review detailed drawings, talk with project staff, and share feedback that will shape how this major public space is phased, funded, and ultimately used.
5. Resident accuses Santa Monica Mayor Caroline Torosis and City Manager Chi of closed-door Public land deals (smobserved.com) — A Santa Monica resident is accusing Mayor Caroline Torosis and City Manager Oliver Chi of creating a secretive process to control city land deals, including Bergamot Station, parking structures, and the airport site. Public records instead show surplus-land designations, closed-session lease talks, and long-term planning for affordable housing and a future park, while voter-approved Measure LC still limits development on post-airport land.
