How do local housing policies actually function in Santa Monica? Understanding the distinction between these two elected bodies is crucial for navigating our local government
Rent Control Board: This independent elected agency strictly regulates the maximum allowable rent increases for units built before 1979. They adjudicate disputes between landlords and tenants, maintains the city rental database, and enforces tenant protections against unlawful evictions.City Council: As your primary governing body, the council oversees the broader municipal landscape. We manage the city's budget, set overarching zoning laws, approve new affordable housing initiatives, and decide which charter amendments go on the local ballot.I'm a fierce advocate for protecting our existing rent-controlled units. Keeping our longtime seniors and working families in their homes is essential for preserving our diverse community. I stayed in Santa Monica as a low-paid teacher because I lived in a rent-controlled apartment. I lived there for 18 years and was thankful every day.A vital reminder. Don't be fooled! Only the voters can significantly change rent control laws, as the law is codified in the city charter. No councilperson or city council can abolish or alter rent control. Visit
