Bacteria Warning Issued In Santa Monica After 5K-Gallon Sewage Spill

SANTA MONICA, CA — Authorities issued a bacteria warning for multiple Santa Monica beaches after a major sewage spill at a Torrance beach.

Some 5,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into Malaga Creek in Torrance Tuesday night, according to Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn. Additional details about the spill were not immediately available.

The spill closed RAT Beach near Palos Verdes at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, and the beach will remain closed until bacteria levels reach acceptable levels, according to the Los Angeles County Public Health Department.

In Santa Monica, the spill prompted beach warnings for the Santa Monica Pier and Wilshire Blvd Storm Drain at Santa Monica Beach (North Tower 12).

The spill also prompted beach warnings for a number of nearby beaches that could have been affected by the spill, including Mother's Beach in Marina Del Rey, the Redondo Beach Pier and Inner Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro.
