Do You See & Smell Smoke, Santa Monica?

The Creek fire near Sylmar has pushed a thick layer of smoke over Santa Monica. Do you smell and see it?

SANTA MONICA, CA – Ash from the Creek fire near Sylmar is blowing south to Santa Monica. Strong east and northeast winds are expected to continue through Wednesday evening, leaving a heavy layer of smoke over the beach city. The burn area is reported to be approximately 2500 acres with zero percent containment reported, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Air quality may reach Unhealthy levels or higher in areas directly impacted by smoke, SCAQMD said.

Areas of direct smoke impacts and Unhealthful air quality include portions of:

  • West San Fernando Valley
  • East San Fernando Valley
  • Northwest Los Angeles County Coastal

Due to the very smoky and windy conditions, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is calling a minimum day today, however, students may remain on campus for the regular school day if parents or guardians are unable to pick up their students.

SMMUSD is waiting for direction from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health regarding athletic team practices this afternoon and for any additional advice.

SMMUSD says if your student has health concerns, please contact your medical professional for advice at this time. If your student will not be in school due to these conditions, please contact your school office and report your student as absent today.

SMMUSD is working with their after school partners to determine status of after school programs in Malibu and Santa Monica and will have additional information soon. For Malibu schools, there will be no late buses today and Malibu Boys & Girls Club will open early for members and non-members. For Santa Monica schools, CREST and Boys & Girls Club and will have additional information soon.
