"Carter Scratch" is the style of guitar picking used by artists today that was created by Maybelle Carter, mother of the Carter Sisters and mother-in-law of Johnny Cash.
Johnny Cash, June and her sisters Helen and Anita were all good friends of mine so I wanted to capture their stories on how the style of guitar picking was created. I filmed "Carter Scratch" at various locations that were all meaningful to them including Johnny at his farm in Nashville. This was the last time John, June and the sisters were together for a film.
The documentary is educational and entertaining with performances by the sisters along with several of their children performing a song dedicated to Mother Maybelle.
