History Of Presidential Impeachment: Learn The Facts
A UCLA law professor will give a free talk this week in Santa Monica on the U.S. history of the impeachment process.
SANTA MONICA, CA — Locals interested in learning historical facts on the impeachment process can attend a free talk Thursday in Santa Monica held by UCLA School of Law professor Jon Michaels, who will provide a layman’s guide to impeachment history in the United States.
From Michaels, an expert on constitutional, administrative and national security laws, bureaucracy and presidential power, attendees will hear why The Founders included an impeachment provision in the Constitution, how the impeachment process works, and get up-to-date facts on the current impeachment hearing underway in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Michaels' writing have appeared in Foreign Affairs, the Harvard Law Review, Yale Law Journal, University of Chicago Law Review, Columbia Law Review, Penn Law Review, the Washington Post, the American Prospect and the Los Angeles Times, and is the author of "Constitutional Coup: Privatization’s Threat to the American Republic," which was published by Harvard University Press in November 2017, according to event organizers.

He is a graduate of Williams College, Oxford University, where he was a Marshall Scholar, and Yale Law School, where he served as articles editor for the Yale Law Journal. He also clerked first for Judge Guido Calabresi of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for Justice David Souter of the U.S. Supreme Court. Prior to his UCLA appointment, Michaels was an associate in Arnold & Porter’s National Security Law and Public Policy Group in Washington, D.C.
The "Impeached in the USA: The History of Presidential Impeachment" session, hosted by the Santa Monica Public Library and the City of Santa Monica, will be Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the library branch at 601 Santa Monica Blvd.
