While officers were interviewing witnesses, an unrelated individual armed with a knife charged at the officers, police said. An officer discharged their firearm, striking the individual, police said. Santa Monica Fire Department personnel provided emergency medical care, and the individual was transported to a hospital, where they were pronounced deceased, police said. The involved officer was not injured, police said. The scene remains active as investigators preserve evidence and conduct the preliminary investigation; the public is asked to avoid the area, police said.
