'La La Land' Kicks Off Award Season with Big Wins at Critics' Choice Awards
The film about a jazz musician's romance with an aspiring actress came away with 8 awards at the ceremony in Santa Monica's Barker Hangar.

SANTA MONICA, CA -- The musical "dramedy" "La La Land" was acres ahead of the field Sunday night at the Broadcast Film Critics Association's 22nd annual Critics' Choice Awards, formally kicking off the Hollywood awards season in style.
The film about a jazz musician's romance with an aspiring actress took 12 nominations into the ceremony at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica and came away with eight awards, including best picture and best director for 31-year-old Damien Chazelle.
"La La Land," which reunited Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone as romantic interests, also grabbed top honors for best original screenplay, best cinematography, best production design, best editing, best song ("City of Stars") and best score.

The hometown drama "Manchester By The Sea" won three awards: best actor for Casey Affleck; best young actor-actress for Lucas Hedges; and best original screenplay in a tie with "La La Land."
Best actress went to Natalie Portman for "Jackie;" which also won three awards. Best supporting actor was won by Mahershala Ali for "Moonlight; best supporting actress was Viola Davis for "Fences."

In the television category, FX's "The People V. O.J. Simpson" took home four awards: best movie made for television or limited series; best actress for Sarah Paulson; best actor for Courtney B. Vance; and best supporting actor for Sterling K. Brown.
