Marmalade Closes Santa Monica Cafe 2 Years After Move From Montana Avenue

SANTA MONICA, CA — Marmalade Cafe has closed its Santa Monica Boulevard restaurant just over two years after relocating from its longtime Montana Avenue home, ending the restaurant's presence in Santa Monica after more than three decades.

The restaurant at 525 Santa Monica Blvd. has closed, with the storefront cleared and much of the signage removed.

The move to Santa Monica Boulevard was completed in April 2024 following more than a year of planning. The larger restaurant expanded Marmalade Cafe's offerings beyond the breakfast and lunch service that had become a staple on Montana Avenue, adding dinner, beer, wine, cocktails and an enhanced grab-and-go menu aimed at downtown workers, residents and visitors.

Commercial real estate records show the approximately 3,000-square-foot restaurant space has been marketed for sublease or lease assignment since July 2025, indicating the location had been available to prospective tenants for more than a year before the closure.

The Santa Monica closure comes as the restaurant chain also shutters its longtime Calabasas location. In an Instagram post announcing that restaurant's final day of service on Aug. 2, Marmalade Cafe described the decision as "difficult" and thanked customers for 28 years of support. The company said it will continue operating restaurants in Westlake Village, Malibu, Sherman Oaks and El Segundo.

Marmalade Cafe was founded in 1990 by Selwyn Yosslowitz, Robert Burns Jr. and Bonnie Burns as a neighborhood bakery and cafe before expanding into a full-service restaurant chain with multiple Southern California locations. The founders sold the business in 2007.
