Mountain Lion Reported Roaming Santa Monica Neighborhood Friday Morning

Authorities were searching for the mountain lion following the reported sighting Friday morning.

SANTA MONICA, CA — Santa Monica police responded to a reported mountain lion sighting in a residential neighborhood near 14th Street and Montana Avenue Friday morning.

The cat was first spotted around 8 a.m., and it was later seen hiding in the bushes of a home near 14th Street and Montana Avenue. The resident of the home snapped a photo of the lion resting in the yard.

State wildlife officials responded to the area to assist in efforts to corral the cat. The work was continuing early Friday afternoon.

Multiple streets in the area were closed while the effort continued.

No injuries have been reported. As a precaution, authorities urged residents in the area to remain indoors, keep pets inside and avoid approaching or attempting to photograph the animal if it is spotted.

Anyone who sees the animal is asked to call 911 immediately and provide their location from a safe place, police said.

The situation remains under investigation.

Officials said additional information will be released as it becomes available.

The reported sighting comes after two mountain lion kittens were struck and killed by vehicles in the Santa Monica Mountains earlier this month.
