Mystery in LA
Artist V. Borchert's painting "Mystery" at "The Body in Parts" exhibit at bG Gallery in Bergamot Station + the artist's words about the art.

For me, when I do the figure I want to capture the raw emotions of the model in that moment of deep thought. In “Mystery”, the painting deliberately and consciously was executed to be presented to the viewer in the “Film Noir” style. In this painting, I present to the audience a narrative – story telling through the art. The Narrative genre of art that I present through my expressionistic figurative art is a way to open up people’s imagination not only to the world of visual art but to the wonderful world of story telling.
As a professional artist and art educator, I seek to always push the limits of imagination and creativity. In my art classes, I engage my students’ observation through introducing them to examples of art history masters and their artwork like Edward Hopper whose artwork depicts lonesome and melancholic narratives such as his famous “Night Hawk” painting . I show the students an image of Hopper’s work for example “Cape Cod Morning”, and I ask them what do they see. Hence, some say a pensive woman waiting perhaps for a her husband, her lover, a letter. Some say a breeze in the air and weather change… she might be looking out for the storm that is coming and so forth. Representational artwork that aims to create a story I feel is one of the strongest in drawing in the viewer and engaging them in a cognitive experience of observation.
Art is a visual matter, your eyes see, your eyes perceive, you mind thinks, your emotions feel, your heart falls in love with a work of art!

I would like to conclude with this poem I wrote about my painting “Mystery” by which I aimed to depict the aura and ambiance presented in the painting through its figure.
“Mystery” poem by Vian Borchert
“Film Noir
Dark shadows
the LA sunset
a murder mystery
a hopeless romantic
A hidden clue
the Hollywood hills
Running in circles
Running with scissors
Playing with fire
Eating it all up
Film Noir
a mystery
a beautiful woman
with pain in her eyes
unuttered words
how can she…
life is tough
life is brutal
Driving into the sunset
a last goodbye
a Chevy convertible
lots of kisses
blown into the air
at the Santa Monica pier
children laughing
children playing
the waves of the ocean
a day of sunshine
the artist she knows
it has to be captured
without words
with expression
a look
a deep look
a look into the eyes
into the soul
of a total mystery
Take a chance
Take a chance
on a stranger
she might be your savior!”
