New Policy May Wipe Out Junk Food At Santa Monica-Malibu Schools
The proposal also recommends that only healthy snacks be allowed during class parties and after hours special events.

SANTA MONICA, CA – The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is considering a proposal to weed out junk food for students on campus, also recommending that only healthy snacks be allowed during class parties and after hours special events. The existing guidelines for SMMUSD's wellness policy needs to be updated as mandated by the State of California, Santa Monica Lookout found in a report to the school board.
School staff would “model healthy food and beverage choices for students,” the proposal said, and a registered dietitian will “oversee and consult regarding all nutrition-related activities available to students.”
A committee formed to tackle the policy updates is comprised of staff, parents, and community members. The proposed rules are part of the larger revision of the current student wellness policy, which goes to the SMMUSD Board at its Thursday meeting.
