Pacific Park Celebrates Labor Day

The Pacific Wheel is flashing special colors in recognition of the holiday and the end of summer.

It's Labor Day, but the Ferris wheel at is working nonetheless. The Pacific Wheel is flashing special colors in recognition of the holiday.

The Pacific Wheel became alight with red colors and patterns on Friday night and will continue to feature them through Sunday evening. The weekend-long celebration is also marking the end of summer.

On a related note, from Sept. 16 to 18, the Pacific Wheel will feature blue lights to raise awareness of prostate cancer, according to City News Service. September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

It's already been a busy year for the Pacific Wheel. In July, it displayed patriotic red, white and blue colors and patterns in honor of the Fourth of July. In May, it featured special colors and patterns for Mother's Day and Memorial Day. In April, it went green for . And in March, it went black for .

The Pacific Wheel is the only solar-powered Ferris wheel in the world and has 160,000 energy-efficient LED lights. The environmentally friendly amusement attraction saves more than 75 percent more energy than traditional Ferris wheels that use incandescent bulbs.

Last year, Pacific Park received an honor for Excellence in Stewardship of the Natural Environment from the the City of Santa Monica, the Santa Monica and the nonprofit Sustainable Works.
