Plastic Bag Ban: Watch SM Residents, Workers React to the Transition
With the ban on plastic bags having gone into effect three weeks ago, Santa Monica locals discuss transitioning to the new ordinance and its environmental implications.
As businesses shift toward eco-friendly bagging, Santa Monica Patch hit the streets and asked residents and businesses what they thought of the . Most said they welcome the change, arguing that it would encourage environmental awareness.
While the long-awaited ordinance went into effect Mar. 9, businesses have a six-month grace period to exhaust their current stock of plastic bags. Starting in September, shoppers are expected to either provide their own reusable bags or purchase paper bags at checkout.
Severo Jornacion, a produce associate at Bob's Market, is confident the change will not affect business in any way.

"It's not just about the bags," Jornacion said. "It's about the shopping experience, and the way people like to come in here and see how wonderful our store is."
