Pod Of Dolphins Mistaken For Missing Swimmer; Search Called Off

Officials ended the search for a reported missing swimmer in Manhattan Beach early Thursday, explaining it was actually a pod of dolphins.

MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — The search for a missing swimmer along the coast in Manhattan Beach was called off Thursday after police report that there was no missing swimmer but instead a pod of dolphins, officials told Patch.

Los Angeles County lifeguards were searching along the coast for a reported missing swimmer.

"It was a report of someone in the water going under but turned out to be a large pod of dolphins is all," Manhattan Beach Police Lt. Jason Knickerbocker told Patch.

The search for the reported missing swimmer started at 10:26 a.m. at 3401 The Strand, between 34th and 35th streets in Manhattan Beach, Franklin Lopez of the Los Angeles County Fire Department told Patch.

The search closed at 12:55 p.m., Leslie Lua, spokesperson for Los Angeles County Fire Department told Patch.

The U.S. Coast Guard will continue to monitor the area for the next hour, Lua told Patch.
