Santa Monica Sales-Tax Increase 'Is Alienating People': See Video
Patch digs deeper into why some Santa Monicans support the recent tax increase and others don't.
More than three weeks after Santa Monica's went into effect, residents and businesses are still buzzing about the topic. Starting Apr. 1, the city's sales tax rose from 9.75 to 10.25 percent following last year's passage of Proposition Y. Per the accompanying Proposition YY, half the tax dollars will go to public schools and the other half to city services. The former measure passed by 61 percent and the latter by 68 percent.
In recent weeks, Santa Monica Patch readers have about the tax, with some voicing their opposition for it and others their support. Santa Monica Patch recently reached out to residents for video interviews. We also contacted many businesses about the tax increase, but only one agreed to an interview.
Watch the above video to see why locals support or are against the sales tax increase.
