Santa Monica's 'Cardboard City' Pop Up Art Center Returns

A free hands-on pop-up museum of cardboard will open in Santa Monica this weekend.

SANTA MONICA, CA — A 5,000 square foot hands-on museum exhibition will make a comeback in Santa Monica this weekend.

Cardboard City is a free pop-up art event showcasing massive cardboard sculptures, furniture, architectural models, costuming and more. The exhibit will open Saturday and will feature art from 25 Los Angeles artists as well as offer hands-on activities.

The pop-up will offer an "Activity Zone," providing an opportunity to transform cardboard, a sustainable and recyclable material, into a wide range of creations. Cardboard materials and tools are safe for children to use and are sustainable sourced, the reDiscover center said in a news release.

"Come to Cardboard City with an idea of something you want to make or follow one of our prompts to create a project like a hat, a figurine, or architectural model, to take home or contribute to one of our collective sculptures," center officials wrote.

Community groups with up to 30 visitors are invited to attend but groups of 10 or more should try to make a reservation.
