Textile Recycling Day!

On average, every Americans throw away 68 pounds of textiles per year.  Those old rags, bedding, stinky socks, and unflattering clothing eventually become the ‘fill’ in our landfills.  However, we can Recycle, Reuse and Re-purpose every stitch, at the City of Santa Monica’s Resource Recovery and Recycling Division Textile Recycling Event.  Join in on Saturday, August 31st at the City Yards (2500 Michigan Avenue) and make a difference.

Most people are not aware that cotton can actually be composted and some recovered fabrics can become wiping or polishing cloths.  Even old jeans that just can’t be worn … can actually become wall insulation.

And there’s much more going on than just recycling … there’s reuse.  Bring your favorite old shirt on Saturday for the reuse workshop.  It could be turned into a great Farmer’s Market shopping bag or help replace those pesky thin produce bags with a reusable bag made from a small shirt… no sewing required!

You can take your reusable goods to any of the charities that benefit the Santa Monica area yourself, and if you’re not sure where they are, check out the Reuse Guide at www.smgov.net/r3.  Or come to the City Yards on Saturday and we’ll help get all that old ‘stuff’ recycled… which helps us keep it out of the landfill.

What to bring:  Clean and dry textiles like clothing, paired shoes, towels, sheets, scarves, hats, bags and belts. (Plus, an old t-shirt for a reuse workshop!)
