Unknown Substance Forces Santa Monica Beach Closure
A substance found on the beach in Santa Monica has forced the beach closure as authorities attempt to identify it.

Chunks of an unknown white substance came on shore in Santa Monica tonight, causing authorities to close a portion of the shoreline.
The discovery of the substance was reported about 7 p.m. between lifeguard stations 15 and 17.
Los Angeles County hazardous materials experts, as well as county lifeguards and Santa Monica authorities were trying to figure out what the stuff was, where it came from and how to deal with it.

A county fire dispatcher said that the material was possibly coming from a septic tank, perhaps being discharged from a cruise ship.
Santa Monica Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Tom Clemo said his hazardous materials team still wasn’t sure what it was. As a precaution, he said the beach was evaluated, although the pier was still open.

Clemo said he hoped to have an announcement later tonight about what the substance was and how to deal with it.
