LAKESIDE, CA – The number of cats confiscated from a crowded apartment in East County has spiked to 127, San Diego County Animal Services reported Friday.
Animal control officers removed 112 cats Thursday and at least another 15 felines Friday from an apartment on Channel Road in Lakeside. It was initially reported that about 70 cats were found living in crowded and filthy conditions in the home, according to County Animal Services.
Sheriff's deputies discovered the cats while conducting a welfare check on a person at the apartment.

Although living in a heavily cluttered, foul-smelling home, which had feces scattered on the floor, the semi-feral cats appeared to be fairly healthy, according to County Animal Services Director Dan DeSousa. The senior living in the apartment was cooperative with authorities, and the felines, while poorly socialized with humans, appeared largely healthy and reasonably well-fed, DeSousa said.
The cats are being evaluated by veterinarians and will be given any necessary medical care, DeSousa said.
