📰 News we're reading

• Could a little-known new law bring sales tax rates in San Diego County to 10% — or higher? (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Santee residents are being asked to weigh a possible one-cent local sales tax increase this fall, even as a new state law could eventually let San Diego County cities push overall rates toward 10 percent. The measure would come on top of other proposed countywide and transit-related tax hikes, raising questions about how much more local shoppers might pay and what services would benefit.

• Tropical Storm Rachel swamps San Diego County with heavier-than-expected rain (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel dumped 1.56 inches of rain on Santee while drenching much of San Diego County, flooding roads, damaging coastal areas, and prompting multiple water rescues. Power outages, coastal flooding, and dangerous surf were reported from Oceanside to Imperial Beach, as emergency crews handled collisions, downed wires, and swift-water rescues through late Saturday night and Sunday.
