SPRING VALLEY, CA — A woman was arrested after allegedly beating a 65-year-old person with an aluminum bat and barricading herself inside a room at an East County independent living facility, authorities said.
Deputies responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday in the 900 block of Sacramento Avenue in Spring Valley, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said Jennifer McCoy, 40, struck the victim in the head with an aluminum bat following an argument. The victim suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital.
McCoy barricaded herself inside her bedroom with the bat and refused to surrender despite repeated attempts by deputies to negotiate with her, officials said.
The sheriff's crisis negotiation and SWAT teams were called to assist.
McCoy was taken into custody shortly after 5:15 a.m. with the help of a sheriff's K-9. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and was expected to be booked into the Las Colinas Detention and Reentry Facility on felony assault charges.
The sheriff's Elder Abuse Unit is investigating the case.
