Hypocrisy is Grand

What does being an adult mean? Sometimes I'm not so sure.

Not long ago, the world cried fowl after a . There was anger, there was rage- and there was hypocrisy at its finest!

In the blink of an eye, many Santee residents reverted their principles to nothing short of draconian- that the actions of a few spoke for the many. Suddenly, it seemed, "most" 17 year olds were stupid, irresponsible, bad to the bone.

As I watched the hilarity of the situation unfold, I couldn't help but feel a little bit confused. Us teenagers grew up believing that generalizing people was wrong- that the actions of a few did NOT speak for the many. So I couldn't understand why these adults, who I have always looked up to for guidance, were so quickly turning on us, labeling us and discrediting us.

I am not a sensitive person at all, but I felt a little hurt at what was going on. So I decided to ask a simple question; since when is generalization considered acceptable? I felt it was a fair question. After all, I was taught at an early age that it was wrong.

But instead of getting an answer, a particularly dull minded person made a racist comment toward me- now my confusion turned to anger.

Is this really what being an adult means? That it is suddenly acceptable to turn against our ideals? That we can use our wisdom as an excuse to justify our prejudices?

Of course, I would be wrong to say that all adults are like this. Because no matter how upset I get with anyone, I know that blaming everyone else is wrong.
