Brush Fire Sparks Off I-8 In El Cajon, Threatens Structures

A Sig-alert was issued for the eastbound side of the freeway​.

EL CAJON, CA – A brush fire sparked Saturday in San Diego's East County, threatening structures in the area.

The blaze, called the Cañada Fire, broke out near Interstate 8 and Los Coches Road in El Cajon, according to Cal Fire. The fire burned about 3 acres and threatened structures before crews stopped forward progress of the flames.

The fire was first reported around 5 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. A Sig-alert was issued within minutes for the eastbound side of the freeway.

By 6:15 p.m., the fire was 50 percent contained, officials said. Crews were expected to remain at the scene until 10 p.m.

The right lane was blocked on eastbound I-8, east of Greenfield Drive, according to Caltrans.
