Child Struck By Truck, Seriously Injured In East County​

The 9-year-old boy was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with major injuries, according to the CHP.

EL CAJON, CA — A child was struck and seriously injured by a pickup truck over the weekend in San Diego's East County, authorities said Friday.

The crash happened at about 6 p.m. Sunday when a 1991 GMC Sierra was traveling northbound on Rios Canyon Road, approaching the intersection with Kelli Lane in El Cajon, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At the same time, a 9-year-old boy entered Rios Canyon Road and tried to cross in a westerly direction, Officer Jared Grieshaber. The driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian and crashed into him.

The boy, who was from El Cajon, was taken to Rady Children's Hospital with major injuries, Grieshaber said.

The driver of the truck, a 76-year-old man who was also from El Cajon, remained at the scene, Grieshaber said. Alcohol and drugs were not a factor in the crash, he noted.
