REMEBER TO DROP • COVER • HOLD ON

The Great California ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes. Every year, we develop different ways to practice earthquake safety by changing the drill to promote different issues we may encounter during an earthquake. This year will focus on conducting our “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill, and we will also be “Securing our Space.”

At 2:30pm on October 21st, we will conduct our “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” drill. During this time, practice DROPING to the ground, take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table, and HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops. The second component to this year’s drill is to take a moment and “Secure Your Space.” Start by moving furniture such as bookcases away from beds, sofas, or other places where people sit, sleep, or spend a lot of time. Move heavy objects to lower shelves. According to a study from the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), 55% of the injuries during the 1994 Northridge earthquake were caused by falling furniture or objects. Only one percent of injuries were caused by building damage.
