Friday Night Lights: Week 8 Prep Football Preview

With four weeks to go in the regular season, only six high school football teams in San Diego County have yet to experience a loss—Santana (7-0), Poway (5-0-1), St. Augustine (6-0), Madison (6-0), La Jolla Country Day (6-0) and Mountain Empire (6-0).

Santana has yet to crack the top 10 in the polls published by the North County Times and the Union-Tribune, but another blowout win Friday against El Capitan (1-5) may do the trick. The Sultans have posted three straight shutouts in which they have outscored their opponents by a 149-0 count.

Santana will get its biggest test next Friday when it hosts 5-1 Mount Miguel in a Grossmont Valley League showdown that should be a high-scoring shootout.

In a Grossmont Hills League game between La Mesa-area rivals Friday night, No. 1-rated Helix visits 4-1-1 Grossmont.

Poway, ranked No. 2 in the North County Times poll and fifth in the U-T listings, will have its hands full with visiting Westview (6-1) in a key Palomar League game. The Wolverines have outscored opponents 160-36 this season and have not allowed a score in the first quarter.

The private school game of the week pits Santa Fe Christian (5-1) at La Jolla Country Day (6-0). Both are 1-0 in the Pacific League, which the Torreys rejoined this year. LJCD has scored 246 points and allowed just 35, but Santa Fe Christian has played a tougher schedule and is on a five-game winning streak.
