The two-vehicle crash was reported at 6:25 p.m. Sunday on Wildcat Canyon Road in Lakeside, according to the California Highway Patrol.

"For reasons still under investigation, the Ford drove over the painted double yellow lines, into the northbound lane of Wildcat Canyon Road, causing the front of the Ford to strike the front of the Volkswagen," Grieshaber said. "The force of the impact caused the Ford to overturn coming to a rest in the traffic lanes and the Volkswagen veered off the east side of the roadway."
The driver of the Volkswagen died at the scene, Grieshaber said. The driver of the Ford was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital with major injuries.
