Pedestrian Fatally Struck After Entering Traffic In East County

Authorities said the pedestrian crossed into the eastbound lanes in low-light conditions for reasons still under investigation.

LAKESIDE, CA — A pedestrian was killed Saturday night after being struck by a pickup truck in San Diego's East County, authorities said.

The crash happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Woodside Avenue, east of Prospect Avenue in Lakeside, according to the California Highway Patrol. A 56-year-old Lakeside man was driving a 2015 Ram 1500 eastbound at about 40 mph when an unidentified male pedestrian entered the roadway in front of the truck's path.

Authorities said the pedestrian crossed into the eastbound lanes in low-light conditions for reasons still under investigation. The driver struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was withheld pending family notification.

The driver was not injured. Investigators said alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash.
