224 New Calif. Laws Signed, 28 Vetoed In Last 9 Days: LIST

Gov. Jerry Brown has been very busy. Learn about the all the newest legislation here.

As Californians went about their week, Gov. Jerry Brown was busy signing more than 200 new laws. A total of 224 bills were made law over the course of the last nine days. Meanwhile, only 28 were denied a signature by Brown. The new "sanctuary state" law received widespread attention, but what about the rest? Let's take a look.

Within all the new legislation is a bill designed to help prevent abuse and tighten oversight of the DMV’s parking placard and license plate program for motorists with disabilities.

"We must block scofflaws and fraudsters from gaming the DMV’s placard and license plate program for drivers with disabilities and ensure that the motorists who need this important program have access to its benefits," said Sen. Jerry Hill, D-San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. "These changes to state law, along with changes recently made by the DMV, will go a long way toward reducing fraud and abuse."

Hill also had another notable bill pass — SB 20 requires drivers and passengers in commercial buses that are equipped with seat belts to wear the safety devices.

Among the vetoed bills, Brown declined to sign a bill that was aimed at stopping people from smoking on every state beach and park across California.

"Last year I vetoed Senate Bill 1333, a similar measure, because I believed that such a far reaching prohibition in every state park and on every state beach was too broad," Brown said in his veto message. "In addition, the fine prescribed in this bill for lighting one cigarette is excessive: over $250 dollars, after the mandatory assessments.

"If people can't smoke even on a deserted beach, where can they? There must be some limit to the coercive power of government."
