Santee Block Grant Planning Underway For Allotment In 2023-2024

SANTEE, CA — The Santee City Council is starting the process of allocating annual community development block grants for 2023, they announced over the city's website.

The request for proposals is open through Jan. 9 for the program year that runs from July 2023 through June 2024.

The block grant, as stated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, is a flexible program to provide communities with resources for unique needs within the city. The grant also gives the city the flexibility to transfer funds where they are most needed, and groups that receive the funding from the block grants must spend it on activities to benefit low and moderate income residents, according to the grant.

According to a document released by the city, the highest priorities include improving the community infrastructure and facilities to be accessible and safe for all, to provide public services and activities that improve the quality of life for area residents, and to support affordable housing opportunities for low- to moderate-income residents.

The final goal would be to strengthen local businesses and the economy through new jobs and training for current employees.

"Eligibility is determined by household income compared to the median household income in the region, adjusted for household size," the city said.
