Santee Trolley Cars on Their Way to Argentina

Trolley cars that used to run through Santee may now find their way to Argentina. The Metropolitan Transit System in San Diego announced Monday it will sell two dozen older trolley cars to the city of Mendoza, Argentina, for $5.1 million.

The sale comes as the local transportation agency prepares to deploy more of the newer low-floor light rail cars on its tracks. Right now, they only run on the Green Line, which services Santee, but will be added to the Blue and Orange lines when a project to renovate stations is completed.

A signing ceremony for the sale is scheduled for Tuesday, according to the MTS.

Mendoza is in a wine-growing area in the foothills of the Andes Mountains of western Argentina, closer to Santiago, Chile, than the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. It is the country's fourth most-populated metropolitan area.
