SDPD Officer Charged With Domestic Violence, Assault With Gun

SANTEE, CA – Felony charges were filed Wednesday against a San Diego police patrolman in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident.

Officer Timothy Allan Romberger, 39, faces up to nine years in state prison if convicted of felony domestic violence and assault with a semi- automatic firearm.

Romberger, who is out of custody on $50,000 bail, pleaded not guilty to both counts and is due back at the El Cajon courthouse on Feb. 22 for a readiness hearing.

An 11-year veteran of the department, Romberger was taken into custody in Santee early last Wednesday morning, a day after the alleged crimes were reported, SDPD public-affairs Lt. Brent Williams said.

"His police-officer powers have been revoked, and he has been suspended from duty with pay while the investigation continues," Williams said.

Authorities declined to immediately disclose details of the accusations against Romberger, who is assigned to SDPD Eastern Division patrol, but the criminal complaint states that the alleged crimes occurred on Jan. 12.

District Attorney Summer Stephan released a statement regarding the charges filed against Romberger.

"Domestic violence is the single greatest cause of injury to women in the United States," the county's top prosecutor said. "Protecting victims of domestic violence and prosecuting their abusers is a priority for our office. As District Attorney, I am thankful to San Diego Police Chief Dave Nisleit and his team for conducting a thorough investigation of one of their officers and submitting a case to my office for potential prosecution. For justice to thrive, it is important that everyone is accountable under the law."
