The Wood ‘n’ Lips Open Mic Newsletter

Once a week local musicians of all ages meet at Friendly Grounds Coffeehouse to play music and enjoy the night.

7:30 David Farrel: Is another of the many who stowed their guitars at the advent of Disco, raised their children, and now are resurrecting their musical skills.  For his first set after a twenty-five year hiatus, he did a Bob Dylan tune, “Knocking on Heaven’s Door”; and Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone”.

7:45 Ray Poe with Les Armstrong & Alton Simpson: The Western band played Tom Waits’ “Invitation to the Blues”; George Jone’s “The Race is On”; Carl Perkins’ “Matchbox”; George Strait’s “All My Exes Live in Texas”; and Keith Whitley’s “I Never Go Around Mirrors”.

8:00:  Pamela Reinagel & Dan Strum: The pair, with Pamela singing and Dan on guitar, did Fred Neal’s “A Little Bit of Gray”; Boudeleaux Bryant’s “Love Hurt’s”; Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice”; and Townes VanZant “If I Needed You”.

8:15  Bob Arsenaut, Bob Cool and John Movius: Kicked off with “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home”; Bill Monroe’s “The Bluegrass Stomp”;  “November Rain”, and Bob Cool’s “San Diego Breakdown”.
8:30 Dan Strum: Returned to the stage for a solo set of “Been Out on the Road”; Guy Clark’s “Dublin Blues”; and Jerry Jeff Walker’s “Song For Life”.

8:45 Greg Gross:  Brought us the timely “They’re Closing the Bookstore Down” (even Borders’ is biting the dust), by John McCutcheon; Jimmy Buffet’s “Come Monday”; and Stan Rogers’ “White Squall”; Greg was joined by two of the fairer sex, Rose Scibelli and Sally McSparran, on Patti Page’s “The Tennessee Waltz”; and the traditional “I’ll Fly Away”.

9:00 Bob, Bob & John: Did an encore for us with “Bile them Cabbage Down”; “Grandfather’s Clock”; “Up Jumped the Devil”; and “Faded Love” and “Ashokan’s Farewell”.
Greg Gross and I closed the evening with Dale Evans’ “Happy Trails”.
It was a bit of a relaxed evening with a slightly smaller group.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the July 16th, at the Shopping Center’s Amphitheater in Santee. Celebrating ten years of the Wood ‘n’ Lips Open Mic, it will be from 10:00 in the morning until 6:00 pm with some of our best performers.

God Bless and have a good week.
