Feather Fire Burns 133 Acres In Barona, Briefly Threatening Homes

The wildland fire south of Ramona rapidly spread, a San Diego County fire official said.

San Diego County, CA — Crews have stopped the forward rate of spread of a 133-acre wildland fire that erupted Monday near Barona, briefly threatening some homes, a fire official said.

An evacuation advisory for the Barona Mesa area prompted by the so-called "Feather Fire" near Featherstone Canyon Road has since been lifted, according to Cal Fire-San Diego Capt. Kendal Bortisser.

The fast-moving fire broke out around 1:15 p.m. for unknown reasons and within minutes had charred 30 acres and then 50.

By 3:30 p.m., fire crews from the ground and from the air were reportedly making good progress.

A more thorough mapping of the fire revealed it was 133 acres in size, not 55 acres as previously stated, according to a 5:15 p.m. update from Cal Fire-San Diego.

As of about 9 p.m. Monday, firefighters had the blaze 50 percent contained.
