Crews Battle Brush Fire Near Saratoga Wineries

Breaking: Crews were expected to continue fighting the Eden Fire overnight, officials said.

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA -- Officials said firefighters will continue working through the night to extinguish a vegetation fire that broke out Monday afternoon at the western edge of Saratoga. Now dubbed the Eden Fire, the blaze was first reported on Mt. Eden Road west of Pierce Road, off Highway 9, according to an alert sent out by Santa Clara County Fire Department officials.

As of 10 p.m. Monday, fire officials said the Eden Fire was 10 acres and 75 percent contained. Officials also reported late Monday that the blaze has resulted in a power outage in the Orchard Meadow neighborhood. Also according to fire officials, there was an incident involving a drone at some point, which caused the grounding of a fire helicopter. The incident was under investigation.

Initial reports of the brush fire burning in the hills near Mountain Winery -- sending off a plume of smoke visible to nearby ranchers and property owners -- were received at 3:19 p.m. Monday, according to fire officials.

The Santa Clara County Fire Department confirmed at 5:08 p.m. that no structures were currently being threatened; the fire was burning uphill away from homes, toward Mountain Winery vineyard, fire officials said. However, residents on Mt. Eden Road were asked to shelter in place and avoid the roadways to allow firefighters to access the area with their equipment.

Mountain Winery, a popular music venue with several concerts scheduled this week, is located at 14831 Pierce Road.

Cooper-Garrod Estate Vineyards and Mount Eden Vineyards are also in the area, but reports indicated they were not immediately being threatened by the blaze.

Monday evening, there were 150 firefighters assigned, who were making good progress on the fire, officials said.
