Elderly Motorist Killed In Hwy 85 Crash

The accident was this morning near Cottle Road.

A 72-year-old man was killed in a solo car crash early this morning on state Highway 85 in South San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man was driving a 1999 Toyota at about 70 mph around 1:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 85 south of Cottle Road, near Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center, CHP officials said. He lost control of the vehicle, traveled off the road’s edge and crashed into a fence, according to the CHP.

Emergency crews transported him to a hospital, where he died of his injuries, CHP officials said. Investigators do not suspect drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, according to the CHP.

The man’s identity will not be released by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office until his next of kin is notified of his death.
