A suspicious early morning fire Saturday partially destroyed a home at 21284 Maria Drive in Saratoga near Prospect Road.
Santa Clara County arson investigator Jeremy Davis said the fire began shortly before 1 a.m. in the one-story, three-bedroom and two-bathroom home occupied by an elderly couple.
When the first engine arrived, it found the 2,000-square-foot home's garage engulfed in flames, with heavy smoke emanating from the dwelling, according to Davis.
Santa Clara County sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene first and, with the help of neighbors, alerted the couple about the fire and they escaped without injury, he added.
Because the home is uninhabitable, the American Red Cross was called to assist the couple with emergency housing, he said.
It took about an hour to get the blaze under control, he said, adding that reports of illegal fireworks were made and that it's believed firecrackers may have landed on the garage's roof igniting the fire.
"At this point the fire is considered suspicious," Davis said. "We have evidence that fireworks landed on the roof."
More than 35 firefighters responded to the scene and the fire caused more than $200,000 in content and property losses, he said.
Anyone with information about the fire or the illegal fireworks is asked to call the Santa Clara County Fire Department's anonymous tip line at 1-888-341-4401.
