Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween can be a fun time for kids and adults alike—as long as you stay safe.

Below are common police tips for enjoying Halloween while staying safe at the same time.

  • Trick-or-treat while it is still light outside.
  • Wear a costume that makes it easier for you to walk and be visible.
  • If you do trick-or-treat at night, wear a costume of a lighter color that is more easily visible.
  • Carry a flashlight.
  • If your costume includes a mask, be sure to take off your mask while crossing the street.
  • Consider wearing makeup instead of a mask.
  • Ask your parents or other grown-ups to trick-or-treat with you, or go in groups.
  • Consider using reflective tape to make yourself more visible at night.
  • Cross only at intersections or crosswalks - NEVER cross behind vehicles.
  • Plan your trick-or-treat route beforehand.
  • Select costumes, masks, wigs or beards that are flame-retardant.
  • Keep flammable decorations away from open flames like candles, pumpkin lights, etc.
  • Wait until you get home before eating any candy, so your parents can check it first.
  • Avoid lightweight, cotton fabrics and costumes with loose, baggy sleeves.
